Abacus Small Business Accounting was founded by Deanna Diaz, a business owner, entrepreneur, and accounting professional with more than three decades of experience working alongside small businesses.
Before launching Abacus, Deanna served in the United States Air Force Intelligence community and later built a career spanning commercial construction, project management, accounting (public & private), business operations, payroll, compliance, and financial management where those experiences shaped the practical, no-nonsense approach that Abacus clients have come to expect.
Unlike many accounting firms, Abacus is not built around layers of staff, departments, or call centers. When you work with Abacus, you work directly with Deanna. More importantly, Deanna is not just an accountant. Like many of her clients, she is a business owner. She understands what it means to make payroll, manage cash flow, deal with difficult clients, hire employees, navigate growth, control expenses, and make decisions when there is no instruction manual sitting on the desk. She has owned and operated her own business longer than many of her clients have owned theirs. That perspective matters.
She also has a reputation for being a bit of a bulldog when it comes to accounting, compliance, and protecting her clients' interests. She pays attention, asks questions, and isn't afraid to dig deeper when something doesn't look right.
Throughout her career, Deanna has worked with business owners, contractors, tradespeople, service providers, and entrepreneurs in a variety of roles. She has worked in the field, managed projects, overseen accounting departments, supervised payroll and bookkeeping operations, participated in company leadership decisions, and helped business owners understand the financial impact of the decisions they make every day.
Most business owners do not need another person to explain accounting terminology. They need someone who can help them understand what their numbers mean, identify potential problems before they become expensive mistakes, and provide practical guidance based on real-world business experience.
Deanna also keeps a close eye on legislative, regulatory, and economic developments that affect small businesses. Tax laws, labor regulations, reporting requirements, and government policy decisions can have a significant impact on business owners, and understanding those changes is an important part of helping clients plan ahead.
While accurate bookkeeping and financial reporting are the foundation of every client relationship, many business owners rely on Abacus for much more:
• Financial oversight and accountability
• Cash flow and profitability analysis
• Payroll and compliance guidance
• Business structure discussions
• Operational and financial decision-making support
• Financial trend analysis and reporting
• Independent, objective feedback from a fellow business owner
Abacus works primarily with owner-operated businesses throughout Colorado, with a strong focus on contractors, tradespeople, service providers, mental health professionals, and other entrepreneurs who value straightforward answers and practical support.
The mission is simple - Provide accurate financial information to help business owners understand their numbers and support better business decisions.
Yes, good books are important but knowing what to do with the information is where real value is created.
While Abacus is intentionally owner-operated, no business succeeds alone. Over the years, Deanna has built a network of trusted attorneys, tax professionals, financial advisors, insurance specialists, payroll providers, lenders, and industry experts she can connect clients with when specialized expertise and collaboration is needed.
